Week 9!

Well it’s Thursday of week 9…we have the rest of this week and next, and then get into our finals (what fun). I figured I’d take a quick break to post some sort of update on here.

One of the few activities outside of school/homework I’ve done lately was attend the PostSecret presentation last Wednesday. I had never heard of it before, but it’s “an ongoing community mail art project, created by Frank Warren, in which people mail their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard.” People send things in on all kinds of things to him, including bananas and a whole host of other items, and reveal some sort of secret on the card that they’ve never told anybody else. At the end of his presentation the floor was opened up to people in the audience brave enough to get up to the microphone and tell everyone about something they were willing to share.

Reflecting upon what people were saying got me thinking about some of my own personal secrets and internal feelings. I mulled things over in the back of my mind as I went about life and classes, and eventually just started writing everything I was thinking down. The act of taking partial thoughts and forcing myself to be able to form full ideas on paper from them was certainly an interesting task, especially when I’ve sometimes only half thought about the idea. I started with the original intent of making myself a list of secrets that I have, but it really evolved more into general feelings and thoughts that I have, some that are fairly recent and others that have been evolving and changing shape for a while. At the end of it, I ended up with about three pages of random thoughts in no particular order, but all of which influence the way I act, feel, and generally go about life.

One thing that ended up coming out of the “brainstorming” activity and some thinking since then was the sentiment of the saying “you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone.” My mind may be thinking 1,000 steps ahead and predicting some sort of worst-case scenarios of how that relates to me, but it certainly puts the joys and privileges of life into perspective. Life is definitely not something to speed through. Get out and do things, have fun, sad, angry, fantastic, exceptional experiences, and enjoy everything that other people and things have to offer :)

And your (my) slightly-regular randomly interesting Internet links!

Mid-Week Links

It’s that time of the week where I’ve accumulated a bunch of open links that I need to get out of my running Opera session.

There really isn’t much of a theme to these or anything, but they’re either fairly interesting to read or just highly amusing.

Steve Jobs

I’ve collected a multitude of interesting links remembering the life of American icon (yes, I think that can be said given all he’s done), Steve Jobs. I can’t say I’ve ever bought a product of his, but I definitely respect the power he had over people and the passion/knowledge he had for his products

All the best to Steve’s friends and family. He has certainly left a profound impact on the world.

Weekend Links

In another attempt to clean up my bookmarks of various things, I’ve taken the time to post a few more links for someone’s (mostly my) pleasure.

The IPv4 Market

A few interesting links appeared in my RSS feeds the other day, and I figured they were interesting enough to share. They certainly bring up a few discussion topics, though the third link deals more with the political side of reselling IPs and none on the technical aspects that the Ars articles cover. All in all, the topic is something that I'm interested in and I'm not at all sure how the future will end up for it.

Safe Journey, Steve

Steve Jobs has stepped down as CEO of Apple, and we've had a few days to internalize what this actually means. So far Wall Street doesn't seem to mind, as their stock has increased in value since the announcement, and tech pundits seem to have calmed down a bit since. Apple the company is not going anywhere and there are plenty of people there that work incredibly hard to produce the products in their lineup. Here are a few links about the legendary Steve Jobs at Apple.

KVM on Illumos

KVM on Illumos
A little over a year ago, I came to Joyent because of a shared belief that systems software innovation matters — that there is no level of the software stack that should be considered off-limits to innovation. Specifically, we ardently believe in innovating in the operating system itself — that extending and leveraging technologies like [...]

Space: The Final Frontier

I’ve had a bunch of links about the NASA Space Transportation System (STS) – otherwise known as the “shuttles” – accumulating over the past few weeks, so I’ve decided to dump them here. The articles offer a great perspective of the shuttle system, as well as some awesome and spectacular photographs depicting the program over the years. Enjoy the reads :)

DOCSIS

I wanted to post these two links from Ars Technica which were published a few weeks ago about one of the current prominent cable internet technologies, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). The two parts are a nice overview of the tech for those that aren’t network administrators (and even for those that are) and give some insight into how many home internet connections work today.

Posterity

I’m not sure whether the best inventions really come from when people are in the shower, but I certainly had a realization. In 50, 60, 70, or however many years down the road when I’m getting to that age I would need to think of either moving into an assisted living home (or just shrugging it off and skydiving instead) and when I might lose my mind or be forgetting what happened in the past, I will hopefully realize the beauty of what we call a blog in this day and age. I’ll be a little selfish here and say that this blog is for nobody as much as it is for me. The modern diary or written history, a blog serves to hold memories and document events, photographs, names, and other points of interest for the future and years to come. Whatever form the Internet is in in 70 years, I hope to be able to recall my writings and read what I thought of things in my youth :)

On that cheerful note, I attended the TJ 25th Celebration tonight which included presentations by Bettie Stegall, a video by Ed Montgomery (TJHSST Communications System Research Lab director), current and past Principals, and performances by several TJ student groups. I was able to meet up with some people I hadn’t seen in years including Molly P, Jacob W, and several faculty (Ms. Groves still remembered my name :) ) members. If I’m not able to make it to J-Day next Friday, I bid Mr. Washer adieu from FCPS IT, and hope he has a fantastic time getting back into playwriting and the theater.

Loading Summer: ||||||||||_| 90% Complete

Shamelessly stolen from a friend, the title fairly accurate summarizes my feelings right about now at this time of year. We’re all done with classes and all there is between me and the summer are two finals, one of which I’ve already started and am about 30% done with. I’m now just packing up everything I can’t take with me back to Virginia (I’m taking the train!) so I can shove it into storage tomorrow afternoon. This’ll be slightly annoying, as what I’m leaving up here includes all my bedding and related materials…I can manage it though – it still has nothing on sleeping on the ground in the Grand Canon :)

In three days I’ll be on my way back to NoVA, and soon after that I’ll be starting up my summer coop work in Springfield! This summer should prove to be interesting at the very least, but hopefully mostly a learning experience. I definitely want to try and delve into PERL so I have some experience between BASH and Java, and I’m hopefully going to learn how to use and manage a whole bunch of server-side items: UFW, JumpStart/AI servers, DNSSEC, Puppet, Ganeti, etc. The list is fairly lengthy, so that and work should keep me busy.

Onward we go! Lets have a great finish to the academic year and a wonderful summer.

Springtime in Rochester

The Cosmos

I stumbled upon this video (I believe) via StumbleUpon that really nicely uses the recordings of Carl Sagan and adds imagery of the universe to it to make it breath-taking and beautiful. This really was what I needed on a down day – something to be inspired by and to be reminded that the future is yet untold, and it is up to us to determine how we will use our lives.

Carl Sagan: The Story of Everything [Carl Sagan Tribute Series, Part 11]

All parts of the series are equally beautiful, so I would highly recommend watching those as well.

Spring? Syke.

Well this has been an interesting day. Woke up “on time” (alarm went off at 8, slept in until ~9 when I got up for class), and found out my class was online since my professor got stuck at home due to snow. At that point there was only an inch or two at most on the ground which isn’t much for Rochester, but that was sure changed by the end of the day. So essentially I got to act like my first – and only – class of the day was at 2 in the afternoon :)

An inspirational technical text from RIT:
Earlier this evening, some email messages going in or out of campus, or to/from Exchange and Google Apps were delayed unusually long due to the weather.
While this doesn’t necessarily make sense, I’d be curious to know the actual details behind the incident. Sleep and homework comes first though.

Minor Dot Update

So I updated this site/blog a while ago when I changed hosting servers with the intent of actually updating it. It’s now over 3 months later (wow, time travels fast) and that same Pardon the Dust posting is still at the top. I guess that’s generally how college goes, no? Around the end of a semester or quarter one suddenly has lots of free time, it stays like that for a while, and then a new session of classes starts and your free time goes downhill.

My general amount of free time has definitely decreased during this spring quarter, and we’re only in the third week. It seems the mixture of classes that I’m taking, which aren’t incredibly hard (so far), have just taken over with work whether reading, writing, or analyzing texts.

2010-3 Courses:

  • Information Security Policies (4050-360)
  • Introduction to Databases & Data Modeling (4002-360)
  • Computer Crime (0501-507)
  • Financial Accounting (0101-301)
  • Cultural Anthropology (0510-210)

Hopefully even though it’s the spring quarter I’ll be able to reprioritize my time make it so that I’m not up until 1 (or later) in the morning on a Tuesday doing homework for a class at 8am that same day. Last I checked this was still possible, right?

Well, I certainly hope so; we’ll see though, won’t we? :)
